How to access materials at Smith College:

Distance Reference Requests – For reference and digitization requests by email, we reply to research requests in the order in which they are received, up to three weeks from the date of receipt, Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm EST. See the FAQs section at the end of this email for information about accessing material remotely.

In-Person Research – The Smith College Special Collections reading room is open to everyone. Smith College faculty, staff, and students may visit on a walk-in basis. We highly recommend visiting researchers book an appointment to view materials in the reading room to ensure seating.

The Special Collections reading room is located on the third floor of Neilson Library. Campus maps with information about parking and accessibility are available through the Visit Special Collections page of our website.

Our open hours are Monday through Friday, 10am to 5pm. When you arrive in-person, you will be asked to complete a brief registration form and to request materials by writing out paper call slips. We do not pull materials in advance of your visit. (The only exception is for materials held off-site and these are specifically noted in the finding aid.)

You may request up to four boxes or bound items at a time, however there is no limit to the number of boxes and items that can be requested during a single research visit. Please note, we pull materials for you from 10am until 4:15pm and we collect all materials beginning at 4:45pm.

Masks are encouraged in the reading room, available at our welcome desk, and should cover the nose and mouth. We expect that you will delay your visit if you are experiencing any COVID-like symptoms.
